James Coleman’s family have occupied Merrifield farm in Devon for over 100 years, building an excellent reputation for the free range chicken produced on the 82 acre farm.
James decided to join the family business when he was just 18 years old rather than accept a place on an agricultural course at university. Keen to make his own mark on the business, he noticed there was a gap in the local market for free range ducks.
Raised to the highest welfare standards, James rears his ducks slowly for better flavour. His ducks arrive at a day old to the farm, they are kept warm in heated barns for three weeks before they are let loose in their specially designed ponds and grassy paddocks. Their diet is free of antibiotics and growth promoters, simply including the best natural ingredients, vitamins and minerals.
