Every five years, at Tebay Services, we choose a long-term charity partner. In September our next project began. We have partnered with the Soil Association to fund four primary schools, local to Tebay Services, taking part in the Food for Life School Award programme. We will be supporting Orton Primary School, Kirkby Stephen Primary School, Crosby Ravensworth Primary School and Beaconside Primary School. The project links to the curriculum and encourages a better understanding of growing, cooking and learning to love good food, helping to make a positive ongoing contribution to the children’s health and wellbeing.
It’s still early days for the project but already a group of 25 enthusiastic students from Crosby Ravensworth School ventured out of school for the day to visit an orchard. They had the chance to pick and then press their apples and left with a bottle of their very own fresh apple juice. They also visited a market-gardening cooperative where they took graftings of blackcurrant bushes in the hope they will reap a harvest for the school in years to come.
Claire Urquhart, Community Manager for the Westmorland Family said: “This is a really exciting project for us to be involved, giving local primary school children the chance to immerse themselves in an exciting enterprise project in which they learn about food and farming, whilst encouraging a better understanding of food and its benefits to life and health and wellbeing. As a food business we are also able to offer the schools ongoing support and knowledge from our teams plus links with some amazing local food producers.”
Community is at the heart of what we do and we want to invest in it for future generations. We look to work with organisations that are geographically local to us and our colleagues’ communities. We aim to focus our efforts on supporting young people, with an emphasis on food and enterprise.
The programme is funded by a combination of Cumbria Community Foundation and the generous donations made by our customers in our till collection boxes. This project would not be possible without the generosity of our customers and the hard work of our colleagues.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
