Ted Thompson began his candle-making business, Moorlands Dipped Candles, in Cumbria over 30 years ago after stints as a trainee surveyor and a joiner. Inspired by a Danish friend he set about teaching himself the traditional craft of dipping candles, starting with the wick and building the candles up and learning by trial and error.
Most of Moorlands’ candles are made from beeswax and for every 20 tons of honey that bees produce; you get just a quarter of a ton of wax! Ted uses local wax whenever possible, often from beekeepers in Yorkshire. Each candle is made by hand and thanks to the quality and traditional method Ted uses, he regularly produces candles for the Globe Theatre and various period TV productions including Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dickensian and Victoriana.
