Serving proper food where you’d least expect it – on the motorway!

In 1972 the M6 was built, cutting though John & Barbara Dunning’s traditional Cumbrian hill farm.

The Dunning’s viewed the M6 not as the death of their farm but the beginning of a whole new chapter. They opened the first family run motorway services on the UK roads with a small 30 seat café serving home cooked, locally sourced food.

Proper food with locality and a sense of belonging is at the very heart of everything we do. We believe proper food matters. So we serve it where you’d least expect it – on the motorway!

Since opening Tebay Services, a further 5 businesses have been added to the family and we now employ over 1100 people, from Gloucester Services in South West England, to Cairn Lodge Services in southern Scotland, each with their own unique setting and environment.

We may have grown but our ethos hasn’t changed over the last forty years. We have our own Kitchens, where we serve our homemade food and we have Farmshops, where we showcase producers from around the county and beyond who are doing something unique and best in their class.

Not content with just a Farmshop in our motorway services, we created a traditional Butchery within the Farmshop. We pride ourselves on being an old-fashioned butchery at Tebay Services, selling beef and lamb produced on the family farm just outside Tebay village. In 2015, we also opened the motorway’s first Fishmonger at Gloucester Services.

butchery

This summer we’re delighting those travelling on the motorway with our proper burgers made by our skilled Butchers and served in our Kitchens. In our Farmshops our array of fresh summer berries are sourced from the best farms in the country to ensure the very freshest fruit.

We couldn’t do all this and serve throngs of happy customers every day without our family of people working together. We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Buyer to join our team in the Westmorland Family Head Office, here in Cumbria and reporting to our Commercial Director.

The successful applicant will be responsible for growing the size and profitability of our Fresh Food offer in line with our brand values with a focus on butchery, fresh meat and fruit and veg. Experience in a meat or poultry buying role and a strong understanding of butchery, meat processing and agricultural processes is essential and experience of buying in a fruit and veg role is an advantage.
